Such a sad and shocking story, Fatim, but so glad you told it on behalf of the victim. I'm a survivor and one of the hardest lessons to learn is that no lock can be relied upon to keep us safe. Always assume that someone has the key or can break in (especially if you live in an apartment) and have backup systems to prevent entry. Jam a wedge under your front door and lock your bedroom door at night and put a wedge under it as well. Keep your phone charged and near you. Keep your mace full and near you:-)
